Barbuda Island is located on the eastern boundary of the Caribbean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the island nation of Antigua and Barbuda (Spanish for "Ancient" and "Bearded") that consists of these two islands and many smaller ones, around 15 degrees north of the equator. Barbuda Island and Antigua have a population of about 85,000, made up West African, British and Portuguese descent. The country runs as a federal parliamentary representative democratic monarchy. The Head of State thus is the monarch, who appoints the Governor-General as a representative, and Prime Minister as head of the government. The nation's currency is the East Caribbean Dollar, which was adopted after the islands became an independent state within the Commonwealth of Nations on November 1, 1981.
