-> Problem Crops Up for Toshiba Notebooks ~

"Some Satellite notebooks may overheat and fail, vendor acknowledges.
Officials at Toshiba America Information Systems on Thursday confirmed
the existence of a problem with a select of Toshiba Satellite 4100XDVD
notebook PCs that causes them to overheat and fail within a week.
"Recently, we ordered a large number of [the Toshiba units], and two
out of every three laptops died," reports one San Diego-based MIS
manager. "According to the users that had them, the machines would get
very hot, then just shut down permanently." "We've been aware of this
problem and have been working on it for several weeks," says Steven
Andler, the vice president of marketing at Toshiba's portable computer
systems group."

-> Iridium Falls, So Will Satellites ~

"Iridium World Communications has failed to attract a qualified, last-
ditch offer to rescue it from liquidation and now will begin pulling
its satellites out of orbit, letting billions of dollars worth of
space-age communications gear burn up in the atmosphere.
"No bid was received which was a qualified bid," Iridium attorney
William Perlstein told the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan on
Friday afternoon. After what seemed a promising launch, Iridium fell
into bankruptcy protection in August 1999 as sales of its phones and
service proved hugely disappointing. Critics said the service and
equipment were too costly, the phones were too bulky and the service
was too erratic."

-> Bad Diet + No Exercise Could = Cancer ~

"Just because you've thrown your cigarettes in the trash, don't assume
you've tossed out your biggest cancer risk along with the butts.
Poor diet and lack of exercise result in as many cancer cases as
smoking, says the Food and Nutrition Science Alliance. To reduce the
number of cancer-related deaths, people need to eat better and
exercise more, the group says. "Smoking is certainly a major factor"
in causing cancer, says Dennis Savaiano, chairman of the alliance and
dean of the School of Consumer and Family Sciences at Purdue
University. "But it turns out diet and exercise are as big a risk
factor for cancer as smoking." "In fact," he says, "probably two-
thirds of all the cancers are intimately related to diet and exercise
and smoking." The remaining third stem from genetic or other factors,
he says."
