The date of December 21, 2012 has always interested astronomers, record keepers and historians. What makes this particular date so special? The Mayan calendar completes its thirteenth b'ak'tun cycle on this date. The significance of this period-ending is unclear, since there is an incomplete inscription, but the civilization's calendar simply ends. Some people believe this is because the Mayan civilization knew that the world would come to an end, others believe it reflects that there will be a global shift in conciousness. A few pseudo-scientists have even come foward to claim that the Sun's cycle is accelerating and this will come to a head in 2012, and this date could be a prophetic date for a solar event that could forever change or even destroy the world. However, despite the publicity generated by the December 21, 2012 date, Susan Milbrath, curator of Latin American Art and Archaeology at the Florida Museum of Natural History, says that there is "no record or knowledge that [the Maya] would think the world would come to an end." "For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle, and just because they stopped the calendar at the end of a cycle doesn't mean anything and believes any talk of an apocalypse is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."
