Simulbrowse v3.0

Lately the shortcomings of the two main competitors in the browser war, namely Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer, have given wake to the rise of alternative browsers. Many of these are complete stand-alone browsers, as in the case of Opera Software's popular Norwegian browser, while others are simply improved interfaces which make use of the IE rendering engine.

The main driving force behind Opera has been its speed, small footprint, and the ingenious ability to open multiple browser windows within a single instance of Opera. This means you can have several sites up and running at the same time. In practice it works well enough, but unfortunately even with only two sites open things can get a little squished. To make matters worse, the browser is commercial and it offers very limited support for HTML, Java, and Cascading Style Sheets.

Enter SimulBrowse 3.0, a browser which offers speed, support for most of the latest Internet technologies, as well as support for multiple browser windows. SimulBrowse is a kind of shell that sits on top of your web browser (Internet Explorer 4.0 is required, so if you use Netscape or an older version of IE you're out of luck). So while you retain the features of your regular browser, you gain the benefits of SimulBrowse, namely multiple site browsing from one window.

What separates SimulBrowse from Opera is the method through which it organizes the multiple windows. Instead of bunching several full screen windows into one small area, SimulBrowse adds a tabbed interface at the bottom of the browser. This lets you easily switch between windows and still have them remain full screen. Each tab is named according to the title of the website. This can be beneficial, and at the same time a nuisance for sites that offer long title descriptions.

SimulBrowse is one of the best web browser enhancements currently available. It incorporates a feature that should have been initially part of Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator. Though the interface could be better like that of NeoPlanet for example, SimulBrowse is nevertheless an invaluable tool for avid Internet users. To make the offer even sweeter is the fact that this once commercial program is now free!
